Information about ESO (Educació Secundària Obligatòria*)


* Compulsory Secondary Education.

ESO (Educació Secundària Obligatòria) comprises 4 academic years. Generally speaking, it starts at the age of 12 and finishes at the age of 16, even though students can stay in the same high school until they reach 18.

There are 4 years or study periods:

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of ESO.

Our objective is that our students achieve the basic skills they need to succeed.

When students graduate, they can continue studying Batxillerat (Sixth Form) and Cicles Formatius de Grau Mitjà (Middle Vocational Studies).

If students DO NOT graduate in Compulsory Secondary Education, they CANNOT go on to further studies.


Students can enroll in the first academic year of ESO when they are 12 within the same natural year. Other students who are a different age but need to start this academic stage can also enroll.

Admissions and Enrolment

In order to do these studies, it is necessary to complete the pre-registration and the registration according to the criteria provided by the Department of Education.

After Compulsory Secondary School

After graduation from secondary school, students can either go to batxillerat (sixth form) or to a cicle formatiu de grau mitjà de formació professional (middle vocational studies), sporting studies (prior to succeeding in the entrance sports test) or arts and design studies.

Students who are 16 and DO NOT have the secondary education diploma can access to:

  • Initial Vocational Qualification or Qualificació professional inicial (PQPI);
  • Adult schools;
  • Learn foreign languages (from the age of 14 anyone can study any foreign language different from the one studied in secondary education);
  • Initial and professional studies of music and dance (prior to succeeding in the entrance test);

From the age of 17 students who do not have the secondary education diploma can pursue middle vocational studies prior to succeeding the access examination. Apart from, from the age of 18, students can have free examinations to obtain the secondary education diploma.

After graduating from secondary school, students can also seek work.
